Gianni Infantino hailed the 2022 World Cup for having "the best gathering phase of a FIFA World Cup ever," praising the last competition in the ongoing organization before the World Cup grows to 48 groups in 2026.

The FIFA president was right on the money about this World Cup bunch stage. There were a large group of significant surprises, and the last round of matches highlighting the four groups in each gathering playing all the while delivered a few sensational endings that went down to the last second.
I have seen all the matches, to be sure, and put just and obviously, this has been the best gathering phase of a FIFA World Cup of all time. Thus, it's exceptionally encouraging until the end of the FIFA World Cup," Infantino told FIFA.com.

The issue, however, is that the ongoing gathering stage design is set to change, and no one knows whether a 48-group World Cup will actually want to deliver a similar sort of gathering stage show as a 32-group competition.

Infantino was in his ongoing job in 2017, when the FIFA Gathering collectively chose to extend the men's Reality Cup to 48 groups, beginning with the 2026 version.

How might a 48-group bunch stage work?
There had all the earmarks of being a developing agreement that FIFA was inclining toward highlighting 16 gatherings of three groups at the 2026 World Cup, with the main two finishers progressing to the Round of 32.

The issue is that with three groups in each gathering, one group would be inactive during the last gathering stage match, leaving open the potential that a given outcome would own the two groups and opening a genuine chance of conspiracy — much the same as the notorious "Shame of Gijón" in 1982 that made FIFA move to concurrent gathering stage finales.

t seems FIFA could be reexamining that methodology, with different conceivable outcomes currently including two separate 24-group competitions that would see one group rise up out of every half to meet in the last. There is additionally the capability of 12 gatherings of four groups, with the main two in each gathering in addition to the eight top third-place groups progressing to the last 32.

These choices have their difficulties however, meaning the gathering stage at the World Cup will never fully be something similar.

However, there is one little silver lining: the 2023 Ladies' Reality Cup will be the main version with 32 groups. For a couple of additional versions at any rate, FIFA will highlight one World Cup with the ideal gathering stage design.
