Iran was undefeated in the final stage of group play over 10 games, but they did not have to face the 3 most prolific scoring teams from their region in Japan, Saudi Arabia, and Australia who all qualified from the other bracket. Japan finished with the best goal differential at +10 and shared the most goals title with Saudi Arabia who put the ball in the net 17 times. Australia had the longest road to the World Cup. They defeated Syria in a two leg playoff in October 2017 and then defeated Honduras in another two leg playoff in November 2017 in order to qualify.
