HOSTILE WORKPLACE ENVIRONMENT: SOME TIPS AND ADVICE

WHAT IS THIS POST ABOUT
There is not likely a single reader who has not experienced a bad day at work due to conflicts with other staff or leadership. The legal definition of a hostile workplace is difficult to prove as it involves the abuse to be intentional, persistent and discriminatory on certain grounds , etc.
This post is not about those situations that reach a legal level. It is about the usual hostility and conflicts that we may face at levels that don't meet the legal definitions yet are detrimental, disruptive and make you miserable and feel humiliated.

WISH THE METHODOLOGY OF CONFLICAT RESOLUTION WAS MORE HUMAN
Most institutions will have an HR department and a legal department both of which immediately resort to their policy and procedure manual. There is not a single place where I have personally worked that has a dedicated conflict resolution department that can resolve many issues at a human level. I do wish that the culture would change in the corporate world to accommodate that. It will Dave corporations a tremendous amount of money and resources. Most humans have capacity to resolve conflicats through good mediation.

SOME FACTS ABOUT BULLYING
Both parties are usually the same gender
The bully is often in a higher position of power
During research as high as 35% people reported being bullied
Victims may develop health problems and marked stress and effects may spill over into their personal lives
The work place unit is affected beyond the confines of relationship and behavior of the 2 parties

WHAT TO DO WHEN A COWORKER IS HOSTILE

  1. The victim may feel loss of self esteem and worthless. You need to recognize the symptoms ill physical and mental health that may have permeated your life because of being bullied.
  2. You will need to deal with that first and rebuild your self esteem and confidence. Get professional help if needed. It is difficult to lay out a general guideline because your personality is unique. Draw your self esteem from positive things in your life. From the ones that love you, from the accomplishments of your life. From within you. Tell yourself that you are worth it. Wake up with a appositive thought and continue with these throughout the day. You will need practice . You will need reminders. Engage with happy positive people. Do whatever it it takes because next you will need to confront the situation.
  3. Confront the situation DIRECTLY. Write to your superior/HR/ manager as a clearly and directly. Names, dates, places, context, exact words all should be mentioned and also very directly how it made you feel. Make sure you do this first or simultaneously with next step.
  4. Confront the bully in person. Make sure you have a witness present. The bully expects you to be intimidated. Rise above that and let them know in clear uncertain terms to stop the behavior. Identify the behavior. Feel your power.
  5. Understand that corporations don't know how to deal with these situations. Or just simply don't want to. They rather sweep the matter under the rug.
  6. To stop from being bullied you will have to become the person that cannot be bullied

CORPORATE PSYCHOPATHS: HOW TO DEAL WITH THEM
Believe it or not the studies show that people who can be classified as dysfunctional out of that cycle pathic tendencies exist in the corporate world at an alarming leak rate that in the general population . Perhaps the prevalence is about 16 times greater in the corporate world. These people are usually charming to their superiors but bully the ones below them. They are so common that you're bound to meet them .
Unfortunately in with regrets I must say that there's not a whole lot you can do about them. They have too much power over you and if the laws were protective the world would not be the way it is right now

The highest number of psychopaths are in the following professions
CEO
Lawyer
Media (TV/radio)
Salesperson
Surgeon
Journalist
Police officer
Clergy
Chef
Civil servant

So good luck fighting the system the way it is set up.
After a lot of research and reviewing many videos and reading many books I think the best way of dealing with the situation is the process called DUSARMING
When you were called into a police office and be told that you're a worthless piece of crap ,do the following

  1. Don't be defensive and don't counterattack.
  2. Diffuse the situation
  3. Move the conversation to a productive conversation
  4. You confuse and disarm your opponent by reacting differently to what they are expecting
  5. This technique requires practice
  6. It seems completely counterintuitive but in my experience this is your best shot.
  1. FIRST THANK THE PERSON FOR THE FEEDBACK OR BRINGING THE SITUATION TO YOUR ATTENTION. FIND SOME WAY TO THANK THEM.

  2. THEN ACKNOWLEDGE SOME TRUTH IN THE SITUATION. SAY SOMETHING LIKE.... I think I have felt that too to some extent or ... I did not realize that until now but you may have a point there....... don't concede completely but give some validation.

  3. GIVE THEM SOME CREDIT THROUGH YIUR WORDS. ACCEPT A BIT OF RESPONSIBILITY. BUT JUST A BIT. JUST ENOUGH TO SURPRISE THEM. IF YIU ARE LUCKY YOU HAVE TAKEM AWAY SOME OF THEIR ABILITY TO ATTACK YIU FURTHER.

  4. NOW ASK THEM FOR THEIR HELP, THEIR SUGGESTIONS AND THEIR FEEDBACK AS TO HOW TO IMPROVE THE SITUATION.

You may have just wiggled out of a tough situation.

Good article. My advice is just ignore them. If that does not work find a better more friendly workplace. This is easy if you work in a large city. Fortunately I work in the IT field with very nice people.

It is a little known fact that people who leave are almost never the issue. There actually great people with great skills and that easily hireable in the MoveOn
