What Is Happening With the Millennial Workforce?

in #work7 years ago

Is it just me, or do you find that the majority (note, I said majority, not all) millennials bounce around from job to job, looking for the right opportunity, but never really give the job they are in a fair shot? I had a staff member quit on one of my manager friends today after two months on the job. Prior to that, his employee worked for five months for a company in the same industry.

How the hell do you quit two jobs in the span of 7 months because "it's just not working out for you and it's not what you want"? How the hell do you apply for two jobs within the same industry in the span of 7 months, and flat out quit? You think that you would've figure it out the first time? It's beyond me. In the interview he mentioned how she talked about progressing into a management role and how she wanted to be lead a team and make an impact on the group one day.

"Great, our team lead just ran out, now what do we do?"
Awkward silence.

Ok, fair... I get it, maybe some things just aren't the right fit for some people, and there is a little bit of trial and error in life. But what is the deal with this entitled "I want it, and I want it now?" attitude, and why are some people scared of a little hard work? What is the problem with people thinking "bouncing jobs won't hurt me down the line" when in fact, during your 20s you are building your foundation to start a career?

"I'll get the next one".
What if the next one never comes? Where's your Plan B, C or Z?

We all had to pay our dues to get where we are in one way or another. A few people get lucky, but from what I have seen, this is not the norm. So why are people making it out to be? Everyone thinks that success is going to be instant. That it should've happened yesterday. Maybe it's social media or YouTube that makes everyone believe that they can be a star overnight (hey, maybe we all can!).

It just frightens me to see today a lot of millennials jumping like a cat at a flashlight at the next best thing and not digging their heels in and making the most out of an opportunity that could open doors to so many other places or valuable connections. When will people realize that some jobs aren't forever but could be a stepping stone to a much better, brighter, rewarding career?
