Word History: Deadline

in #word6 years ago (edited)

There is an apocryphal legend that the word "deadline" indicated a physical line on the ground surrounding prisoner-of-war camps in the American Civil War. Simple message. Cross the line and get a bullet from the nearest watchtower.

These only applied to the soldiers wearing the wrong uniform.

When I learned about this origin story I began to notice how often the word "deadline" is used in American society. Try this out. The next time you receive a deadline from another person (work-related or otherwise) consider the following: is this person unknowingly trying to maintain a prison?

What does it mean to "work" in the 21st century? Do you go to an office? Work from home? Large company or small entrepreneurship?

Sort:

You nailed it. Every kind of work, even when you are self-employed, is like a prisioner camp. Someone gives deadlines for you to do something, with the hidden threat of unemployment/execution if you cross the deadline.
Before retiring, I worked in an office in a large company, developing computer systems, with many deadlines...

@john-robert, this truely is an history, i just learnt the history behind the word deathline here.

At times it's very good to maintain or keep to a deathline, because it really keep you busy and active to work towards accomplishing a mission before a said deathline, otherwise, you face the consequence.

THANKS FOR THE INFO AND AWARENESS CREATED

Deathline. I don't expect many people to take that one lightly.

@john-robert, lols, absolutely, many people can't take it lightly because many people are afraid to take discipline.

THAN YOU SIR FOR THE UPVOTES

Interesting observation.

Even today, some deadlines may very much be terminal to our career, that is, if we don' meet them, for example.

I personally am still a student, so deadlines are very much part of my day to day life and I don't expect it to change anytime soon. They are needed, though. I know for a fact that I simply would not finish some of my assignments if there was no deadline.

Interesting observation brother. Go Ahead.

Very good history story, great post @john-robert, and I will share this post, thank you for the info.
