Mom-in-law becomes surrogate for her own son and gives birth to her grandson

At 17, Kayla Jones from Texarkana, Arkansas was told that she had a tumor in her uterus.
“Doctors were able to save both of my ovaries, but they had to remove my uterus because there was no normal uterine tissue left,” Jones told ALT Magazine.

“After lots of prayers, the final pathology came back benign. Doctors informed us the only way I could have biological children was to have a gestational surrogate,” she added.

When Jones, now 29, married her husband Cody Jones in 2012, she knew she would be needing a surrogate to bear her children in future— but luck wasn't on the couple's side when it came to finding the right surrogate.
"All of our options (for surrogates) had run out,” Jones explained, and the wait for finding the perfect surrogate was replete with challenges like high cost and a long, emotionally debilitating wait.
In came Patty Resecker, Cody's mother who stepped in to become their surrogate.

“I kept seeing Cody and Kayla kind of get sad and think, ‘What’s our next step?’” Resecker told Inside Edition. “I told Cody and Kayla that I would do it if I can."
Her suggestion turned out to be a blessing in disguise and as Jones revealed, she couldn't be more thrilled about it.
“My mother-in-law always joked about being our surrogate. After a couple of our surrogate options did not work out, we started to take my mother-in-law more seriously,” Jones told LoveWhatMatters.

After conducting some research work on the possibilities of the prospect, Kayla was convinced to go ahead with the decision. A series of tests were conducted to determine if Patty was capable of bearing their child and miraculously, she could.

However, it wasn't an easy process as Jones revealed to LoveWhatMatters how the approval from doctors for Patty being the gestational carrier of the child was needed. If that wasn't enough, another obstacle that turned up their way was their first attempt to transfer the embryo, which failed.

But good news came in after 50-year-old Resecker underwent the second attempt at embryo transfer that turned out to be a success. Post the embryo transfer, Resecker underwent IVF and astonishingly, she became pregnant in the month of May 2017 which Jones described as the "second best day of my life."

The miracle baby

To help ensure a healthy pregnancy, Resecker, who was undergoing menopause at the time, received regular dosages of hormonal injections during the first trimester, according to Inside Edition.
Seven months later on December 30 last year, Resecker gave birth to the couple's child baby Kross Allen Jones via C-section.

“I’ve recently had the privilege of doing one of the most rewarding things: to carry my own grandchild for my son and daughter-in-law. This is something that has blessed not only me and my family but also Kayla’s family. A child is a lifetime commitment and I knew there weren’t two more deserving people than them. To see them with Kross and see the parents they’re already becoming thrills my soul,” Resecker told LoveWhatMatters.

“All those years of waiting, hoping, and praying. It still does not feel real!! You are the best thing that has ever happened to your daddy and me!"
“Life is good. Patty recovered well and is going great!” she wrote further.

While many may find the idea of a family member becoming surrogate troubling, not to add, even vexing, according to WebMD, the idea is nothing short of wise as surrogacy is an expensive procedure and as witnessed in several cases before, give way to creating many complex legal issues concerning parental rights.
Despite American Society for Reproductive Medicine warning about how surrogacy among family members can be incestuous in nature, the couple's case does not fit in the said rhetoric as Kross was born via IVF.

"Mother-in-laws tend to overstep, but Patty is definitely not like that," Jones told Inside Edition. “She’s been so great making me feel like he’s mine, even though I didn’t give birth to him.”

On that note, Resecker added, "Cody and Kayla are the best parents. They’re just pros already."
