The issue of International Women Day

So let me get this straight: I'm strongly for equality of right between men and women.
Just tell me what is the purpose of this day (open question)?

I was taught (maybe they were wrong) that it was to get the women to the same level as men, so they could be treated equally. The cause is strongly fair. However, what is the direct consequence of this? "Happy day to all the women! -50% discount on beauty products and kitchen robots to celebrate them!"
Do you feel the woman is treated equally ? This Day, with a good and honest objective has the exact opposite result: showing that men and women are not the same.
