More science taking place on wife's ship. In a nutshell, they fish certain areas of the sea around the UK. Wife samples and catalogues species and age to determine stock levels in said areas. She can tell the age of a fish by removing the ear bone and cutting it in half. Under a microscope, she counts the rings like a tree trunk.
SCIENCE!

That's a bit rough that the only way to find out your age is to chop off your ear!
This is one of those massive trawlers isn't it?
Does you wife have to go out to sea with them, and don't these fish for things like Monkfish and higher value catch?
Okay, I just spoke to her about it. She says they fish certain areas with certain size/type nets to catch a specific species, like monk fish. As do commercial fishing boats. She actually does a special monk fish survey.
She also said certain seabed terrain attracts certain species too.
Maybe more info than you were wanting!
More info is always good.
I find this stuff interesting. Alwasy used to enjoy watching Trawlermen on tv.
There's no chance in hell that I'd go out in one of those.
It would be good though to be able to update my LinkedIn profile with "Started work at Boaty McBoatface"
Yeah, I dunno how I'd do. She's a tough girl!
Hahaha! It winds her up when I call it Boaty McBoatface...so I'll be sure to show her your comment! Hahahaha!
The whole thing is a bit rough. She says she's a mass murderer but it's to save the species. Greater good and all that.
It's a fishing vessel but it was built specifically for scientific research so there's labs on board and stuff. I'm not sure how big it is compared to commercial boats though.
Yes, she goes out to sea with them for about 3 weeks at a time. Saying that, it's a long story but she's been asked to manage the lab on the Sir David Attenborough (Boaty McBoatface). So we'll be moving to England in a month. :-( But she'll be working in Antarctica again. :-)
I'll ask her about the monkfish and let you know.
I love that: the difference between screwing around and science is writing it down :)
The Scotia looks very impressive and it is amazing that you can find out the age of fish the same way like the rings of tree. I believe there are much more interesting photographs from the trip of wife and may be interesting stories would be great to hear them :)
Haha! I thought it was good too.
I will post more but we have to be careful what we say and show.
