What To Consider When Voting For A Witness

in #witness6 years ago

So @qiyi asked this

and I felt it would make sense for me to give my criteria on why you should or should not vote for a witness and then open it for discussion to other witnesses and users alike. All the images I'm pulling for examples are screenshots from https://steemian.info/witnesses

Also as I explained in my last post, I'm not inactive, I just had an issue where I didn't mine my first block (the last block) so I will be on the latest version soon!

What To Consider When Voting For A Witness

There are several things to consider so first let's list them and then dive into the not so obvious ones.

Communication With Users

Do they communicate with users? Are they responsive to comments? Do they answer important message and inquiries?
It's important that we have great communication, that's why I started the WCA initiative.

Do They Share Witness Updates/Posts Often?

How often are they updating you on what they are doing and keeping track / accountable themselves?
We should be held accountable to update and report to the community as much as we can.

Are They Open To Criticism, Respectful, and Helpful?

Do you feel safe to openly calling them out or criticize them? During communications and engagement are they respectful and helpful?
We should have mutual respect and not deter feedback and criticisms.

Are They Technically Savvy?

Are they able to manage their server or keep in close contact with someone who help them manage updates and setting up their witness node?
The witness must at the very least be capable of getting their node going and maintaining it.

Contributions To The Community

Are they making useful and positively impactful contributions to the community?
You want someone who is making useful and helpful contributions that positively impact the Steem community.

Are They Missing Blocks?

Are They keeping up with blocks or are they missing blocks?
You want a low amount of misses which ensures they are on top of their server management which you can find on https://steemian.info/witnesses

Keeps Up An Accurate And Updated Price Feed

Do they keep their price feed updated?
It is an important part of server management which you can find on https://steemian.info/witnesses

Are They Active? (is there name red / crossed out?)

Unfortunately I'm using myself as an example. Obviously if you don't have good communication with voters, then this would be an issue (but I do.)

Anyways, you appear red if you appear inactive and because I haven't officially mined my first block I currently appear that way. However, most of the time those who actually aren't running anymore will appear crossed out or red because they've stopped mining and aren't on the latest version etc.

Are They On The Latest Version Of Steem Node?

This is aligned with whether or not they are keeping up with blocks etc.
They should be on the latest version.

Are The Parameters They Are Running Vastly Different Than Others?

Are their parameters vastly different such as their registration fee or block bytes?
For example if you saw a registration fee of 3 Steem, then that's extremely off and unless they explain why they feel that way, vastly misaligned parameters are unhelpful and too unconsolidated.

Let me know if this helped you, if there is anything you feel I should add, or just leave some feedback in the comments below :)

I can really appreciate your transparency. I've noticed whether purposely or not many are not as transparent as they should be. I would say always assume people do NOT understand or know what you are doing as a witness. Then you will always cover all your bases and people will feel you are communicating well with them.

Yeah I always try to write in a very easily understandable way, avoiding technical terms and jargon :)

You've definitely succeeded at that! Keep up the amazing work.
