RPC's are voluntary, and not covered in any of the white paper reward cases. You can CHOOSE to run one, and you have NO IDEA what servers I do or do not run anyway... and if you are paying several thousand dollars a month for even TWO 256gb nodes with failover, you are getting completely ripped off on them. Not a very good shopper are ya?
I'll "pay one out of my own pocket" when I get done feeding thousands of people, running a node, a price feed, and a 24/7 steemian operated streaming network that requires several servers, to support free services that people use and appreciate to build block chain loyalty, awareness, and lift up voices and such.
I bet your gambling addiction tool over at steemdice is pretty profitable, so that isnt paying for your RPC while you prey on gullible gamblers, is it then?

Forget failover, think load balancer. A public node with two servers won't serve very much. It's a few more than two servers for that price obviously.
Of course it's a choice. Like it's a choice not to run a bid bot. We do what we want, and the community decides what's worth the witness funds. The whitepaper doesn't say anything about that at all.
Funny that you come up with steemdice now. Of course a casino could be made profitable. That's not my line of work though. It's a proof of concept, and earnings stay in the bank to raise the limit. It's open source though, anyone is invited to spin up an improved clone and market it, if they want to make a business out of it.
