Patch Galore

After the first patch last Tuesday night to fix the biggest issues, two more patches followed in short succession just before the weekend.

It's been quite trying for the witnesses over the week, but that comes with the job.

Obviously, it cannot have gone unnoticed to anyone that the Hardfork had quite some issues from the get-go. Pretty much everyone's User Experience was borked. That was mainly because old settings (voting power for instance) didn't correctly transfer to the new system.

Voting and Posting therefor was not possible straight after the hard fork. Thumbs were twiddled, paint was observed drying, babies were made.

This needed to be fixed fast and was done so 24 hours after launch. Other patches were released later this week, fixing more but minor issues.

Updates were so hot that while we were upgrading our server to run Version 0.20.4 of the hard fork, Version 0.20.5 was already released.

As you can imagine our Dev was working overtime! We're quite sure at one point, he felt like he was the main star of a new Groundhog Day movie. Replaying the blockchain over and over and over again.

A return to normality

The most important thing is that if you've laid low, adhered to Keep calm and carry on, your Voting Power and Resource credits should have been refilled by now (just like expected).

User Experience should return to normal. (if you've used the chain and posted, upvoted etc. that refill might be less than 100% of course)

Just so you know what this hardfork was all about, the bandwidth system was replaced by Resource Credits, because the former was skewed, having the cost for smaller transaction to high, making larger transactions (like posting) to cheap.

This unbalance could not go on forever and needed to be fixed for scaling in the future.

Resource Credits is a self-governing system that balances the true cost for transactions on 3 factors (blockchain size, state size and computational load) instead of Bandwidths one (transaction size). The true transaction cost is paramount for the sustainability and scalability of the blockchain.

We can also edit our post indefinitely now and have a 3 second comment delay instead of the previous 20, which should make the experience of replying to comments a lot more fun and creating accounts is now free (though free is a relative term).

more accurate transaction cost
free account creation
unlimited editing
3-second comment delay

Witness Server Stats

Both the main server as our backup server have been updated to Version 0.20.5.
They have also both been replayed and are running rock solid.

We also have a Seednode which has been updated as well and is currently replaying.
