5G and mmWave - The Active Denial System (ADS) and how mmWave can be weaponized
I'm posting this article as a former Wireless Engineer. Meaning, for nearly 20 years I did some form of maintenance, optimization or design work on the infrastructure supporting your wireless device or smartphone in the United States. Since I left the industry in 2016, I've become concerned about the latest evolution of Mobile Phone technology known as 5G (Fifth Generation). This is not be confused with 5GHz which is sometimes shortened as "5G" also.
To be clear, what I'm concerned about is the potential abuse of the mmWave or millimeter wave bands being rolled out as 'small cells' and nodes in public spaces and residential areas. mmWave falls within the EHF or Extremely High Frequency band defined as 30-300 GHz. With smart antennas it can generate a "pencil-beam" focused signal to any target device or person. There is reason to be concerned.
I've been reading more about the Active Denial System which operates around 95 GHz, similar to what you find in the above slide for "5G Americas White Paper on Spectrum". So there has been discussion of deploying these bands at some point and they would have to have amplifiers/antennas closer to the end user to be effective. This holds true for whether or not it's weaponized or just for the intended wireless data applications.
I'm not saying that this is the intention of 5G mmWave deployment. But the fact that 95 GHz is already used for this and falls within the same range of EHF and mmWave bands being discussed within 5G specifically - the leap to get from wireless data applications to targeting humans isn't too far.
It at least requires further study and for the general population to have a reporting agency or investigative body who will track and report on issues related to the rogue weaponized use of electromagnetic spectrum. To date, I haven't found one that's official or effective.
