Facebook tell me my Nokia/Microsoft phone no longer works with Facebook Messenger

Why is Messenger no longer able to work on a Nokia? Now what am I supposed to do, buy a new phone? I rely on Messenger as I live in a mountainous area with little contact and now you just take it away with no thought. If today was April 1st I'd understand but this if ridiculous.
