FOR CONTEST - PHOTOGRAPHY - 23-MARCH-2018

This is my entry for the photography contest organised by @monajam. You can find the contest here.

Brief Description

In South Africa, where I live, you will find that there is no particular standard when it comes to window size. It's literally all shapes and sizes. This is so difficult that I can't even say that predominantly you will find a common shape or size in a certain area, not that I know of anyway.

It really just depends on the personal taste. It's pretty interesting that you will find one house with really big windows and the next with medium and/or different shape too; All of these in one area. I think that's pretty awesome. Same goes for curtains. Some households prefer blinds in certain rooms of the house and blinds in others. For example, it is not uncommon to see blinds in the lounge or living room and in the kitchen. The rest of the rooms will usually be curtains.

Most commonly, you will also find curtains in all the rooms including the living room and the kitchen. Or even better yet you may still find all rooms having blinds. So once again, even with blinds vs curtains you still find that it's personal taste. But one thing common, however, is that most houses do use one of the two, either blinds and/or curtains. They would normally never not cover the windows, they are almost always covered.

I took the following pictures in an area called Blouberg Strand here in the Western Cape, South Africa.

As you can see this house alone has quite a few dynamics to it. There are about four different shapes and sizes in a single building. This goes to show how people design their houses based on many factors, like where the sun comes in, the most view, and whether the room is on the ground floor or top floor. Many factors that go into this.

When you zoom in you will see that this household uses both blinds and curtains.

Now have a look at the second picture which will also illustrate what I mean when I say the houses are different in terms of how they go about their house designs.

Again, even this particular house. Also in the same area as the first one and yet the design is completely different. You will see there are about 5 different window sizes and shapes in one single building. This , again, just goes to show how people's taste differs and really they'll do what they want.

This particular house looks very fascinating to me. The design of the house itself...it's unconventional.

What I like About the Area

Well, there's lots that I like about this area. The houses are next to the beachfront of Blouberg. The beach is literally a stone's throw away, walking distance. I also love the fact that it's quiet, peaceful and very classy. It's a friendly neighbourhood generally. These are all the elements I love in a neighbourhood.

So as you can see, same area different designs, but all beautiful in their own right.

How do the houses, particularly windows in your area look like? To participate in this contest head on over to @monajam page and participate to stand a chance to win some free SBD and a great Upvote.

Wonderful post. I really enjoy architecture under almost any circumstances. I know a couple of people from Cape Town that I probably need to visit. I would love it.

In my area windows tend to be small on the south and big on the north because of the intense sun. Most use blinds here, or a solar screen that doesn't require any window covering (it restricts vision). The Veranda concept is also in use here, extended roofs and outdoor living spaces.

Thanks for a great post. I really did like it.

Hi bigtom. Yes you should visit sometime. Which country are you from?
