What I Learnt Today: India's Mars Orbiter Mission, Mangalyaan, Completes One Full Revolution Around Mars.

in #wilt8 years ago (edited)

India has been among the few nations involved in the exploration of Mars, and had launched a craft two years ago under their Mars Orbiter Mission, known as Mangalyaan.

Now after two years, the craft has completed a full revolution of the red planet, due to the fact that timescales on earth do not confirm to Mars, and one year there would be around two years on Earth.

A look at the Mangalyaan mission [Photo Credit]

Mangalyaan had been reported earlier as being the cheapest craft ever built when compared to similar attempts by other nations, but it has been a surprising success, that too on the first attempt, and the quality of the pictures and data from the craft is said to be of a very high quality.

Delivering fourth keynote address as a part of Yeshwant Inspirational Talk Series in Bengaluru (Bangalore) in late November, Ritu Karidhal, deputy operation director of Bengaluru-based MOM ISRO Satellite Center said

The span of two years on Earth nearly equals to one year on Mars. The Mangalyaan, which entered into the orbit of Mars around two years ago, has completed one revolution. The data being sent by it over a period of last two years is being studied by ISRO for analyzing atmospheric configuration

As per the report which I have linked below, Ms Karidhal seems to also have touched upon the one question which people seem to have when discussing Mars. Was there, or rather, is there life on mars?

For fear of being accused of promoting "pseudo science" as I have been earlier, I shall refrain from adding anything else and I quote her words below

The question still exists that whether life existed on Mars and can it be possible in future. The atmospheric studies of Mars using data sent by MOM would help in knowing whether the remote planet has methane or any form of carbon in its atmosphere. If such traces are found, the planet can have life like it is hoped to have had in the past
