What I Learnt Today: Astronauts of the Future Will Feast on Calorific Bars!

in #wilt8 years ago

You may have heard of "Orion", the under construction new-age spaceship which would transport humans to the red planet, Mars. But unlike other space projects, the problem of food for the astronauts would have been compounded due to the distance, and so NASA has come up with a solution.

Calorific Bars!

News is out about NASA creating a calorie laden bar, which will be food for astronauts on deep space voyages which may continue for months.

The International Space Station, ISS, has been around for some time now, and with a choice of menu numbering 200 items, the crew had a lot to choose from. But the limitations of a deep space flight were that there could be no "cargo" flights which would re-stock and fill up the larder, and this solution should take care of that problem.

But Ugh, eating calorific bars for months on end? Not for me!

I also quote a portion below of the statement issued by Jessica Vos, deputy health and medical technical authority for Orion, which reads as follows,

When you have 700 to 900 calories of something, it's going to have some mass regardless of what shape it's in, so we've taken a look at how to get some mass savings by reducing how we're packaging and stowing what the crew would eat for breakfast for early Orion flights with crew

So according to her, the weight of the craft will be down while keeping the crews weight up!
