For 55 year old William Samoei Ruto, serving as Kenya's new president is a tough one. He defied all odds, including a refusal from his former boss President Uhuru Kenyatta, to rise to the country's highest office.
Kenya's Independent Electoral and Boundary Commission (IEBC) chairman Wafula Chebukati said on Monday (15/08) that Ruto had won nearly 7.18 million votes (50.49%) overtaking his rival's 6.94 million (48.85%) Raila Odinga in the vote on August 9, 2022.

Efforts to change Kenya
Ruto has promised to implement a new bottom-up economic model. However, exactly how that will work remains to be seen.

His party's manifesto also calls for drastic economic changes to help those less fortunate. In addition, Ruto is committed to forming a cabinet that is equally divided between men and women.

In a recent interview with DW, Ruto talked about his plans to transform the agricultural sector and ensure food security. "Agriculture is the most important sector we have in Kenya ... There is absolutely no reason why we can't produce enough food. There is no reason why 4 million Kenyans are starving," he said.
It's a challenging job for William Samoei Ruto, 55, to take on as Kenya's new leader. He overcame all obstacles, including the opposition of his old boss, President Uhuru Kenyatta, to ascend to the top position in the nation.
