Photo of the Day ~ A juvenile Albatross

in #wildlife7 years ago

As I sit in my hotel room in Buenos Aires, exhausted from the past few weeks working on the ships and going through the few thousand of photographs I have from all various days and excursions. I think about watching and attempting to photograph these incredible birds of the Drake.

This is a wandering albatross - a juvenile in fact. These animals are huge with a 3.5m | 10ft wing span and weighing roughly about 12kgs. They can travel 1,000's of km in day using the wind to glide with grace in search of food. How do they find food over such great distances? They have an acute sense of smell - hence why the circle the ship for only a few minutes, as they can usually smell food.

The one thing I will miss about crossing the Drake passage is watching these magnificent giants of the sky gliding effortlessly around the ship.

This bird is highly efficient in the air.

What a good time, they are wonderful birds, like everything that nature gives us, regards ...

your camera shots are good, I love this beautiful sea eagle photo

The Atlantic yellow-nosed albatross ( Thalassarche chlororhynchos) is a large seabird in the albatross family. The scientific name is from Ancient Greek

i really liked the bird albatross because Albatrosses, of the biological family Diomedeidae, are large seabirds related to the procellariids, storm petrels and diving petrels in the order Procellariiformes. They range widely in the Southern Ocean and the North Pacific. Its saves our environment.

Great information about Albatros. I suppose they hunt fish for food. I love that you capture clearly even the face of the bird. Very cool! Cheers! :)

Albatros has long life span, they could livw until 50 years!
