The Hyrax: The elephant relative that can climb trees.

in #wildlife7 years ago

There is a huge difference in size, but it is actually the closest living relative of the elephant!!!

The most apparent external similarity is the nails on their feet.

They have numerous sweat glands on the feet that make them sticky enough to climb trees and slippery rocks.

Their tusks grow from incisors(like elephants)as opposed to canines as in most mammals.

As mammals, they are considered primitive because their thermoregulation abilities are not well developed.

Hence they will often be found basking in the sun to heat up or straddling cool rocks to cool down.

They are preyed upon heavily by eagles, so another interesting adaptation of theirs is a movable membrane that shields the pupil, allowing them to look directly into the sun.
