Northern Areas of Pakistan are bestowed by nature with beautiful landscape, and amazing flora and fauna. The natural life is so pure and wild animals enjoy their freedom over vast area with gushing streams and green pastures. However, some animals were engendered by over hunting of people who used their precious meat to live.

Efforts of World Wide Fund to protect Markhor

By the efforts of local people and WWF-Pakistan a project is underway to protect The Screw Horn Goat commonly known as “Markhor” in the local language. Markhor is also national animal of my country.

Markhor is mostly found in Northern Areas of Pakistan, Mountain range of Himalayas, parts of Afghanistan and in some areas of Central Asia. It is found in high altitude areas where human interaction is minimum. On heights of mountains it feeds on large pastures to survive. It can easily climb up higher on mountain with sharp angles as well. It has the ability to survive in harsh weather. Snow leopards also prey upon these goats to survive on higher altitudes.

It is famous for its twisted horns and majestic outlook. Kashmir Markhor is very popular in the local residents of the area. People used it as a source of food and its population dwindled to minimum that the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) listed this beautiful goat Red List of engendered species.

WWF-Pakistan came as a helping hand to protect the decreasing population of the majestic animal. It conducted so many research studies in collaboration with local residents to find a way to save this beautiful animal from extinction. It funded many projects in Northern Areas of Pakistan; Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral districts to create awareness among local residents.

Efforts are bearing fruits

With efforts of WWF-Pakistan and local residents of the area the wild goat population has significantly increased in its natural habitat. IUCN seeing its increase in population has downgraded it to the Near Threatened species from the Red List back in 2015.

WWF-Pakistan is doing amazing job in conserving natural life around the globe. Due to the selfless efforts to the organization thousands of animal are being protected from extinction. The efforts of local community and the organization are really appreciated for their wonderful actions to protect nature while trying to increase the population of such a majestic animal.

Way forward

As human beings all of life is sacred to us. We have the means and resources to protect natural life on Earth. By protecting life, we are protecting our future generations. The best gift we can give to our future generations is the clean and green mother Earth with hustling and bustling every kind of species. Live a little but also give space to other species as well.
