Wildflower series ~ Proteas, round 2
A continuation of this post
A pollinated flower
I didn't know this at the time I made the first post: making seeds is a longer process than I thought. After successful pollination, the bract scales slowly close up again while the seeds form.
Here, the bracts are completely closed.
Once the seeds are ready, the bracts will open once more to release the seeds but that occurs 9 to 12 months after flowering so these seeds will only be released in spring. It is likely that the bracts will open in response to being wet once the first rains of the new season fall. There are quite a few plants here that have seed pods which only open after rain.
That is interesting; I wonder how big their seeds are and what they look like when they are ready. That last image tempts me to open it a tiny bit to have a little peek to see what is going on in there.
The inner dissector speaks!
There will be pictures as soon as it's open ;)
hehehe can't wait.
So I don't miss it; can you please tag me when you post it?
Thank you :)
I'll do that!
What an extraordinary flower!
That looks like something dinosaurs used to snack on. It even has reptilian scales.

True. I like the marine/archaic look of what's around me and I tend to dwell on it
These are wonderful flowers! They are quite big.

Yes, some of the family are even bigger
I thought it's some kind of sea creature in the first photo 😀
