Esperanto Already Dead!

Esperanto is already dead! Really?
Of course you probably will not find in your next coffee shop people talking in that language, which sounds like a mix of some Latin languages. However there is a quite big community of Esperanto speakers around the world, chatting, blogging or writing articles e.g. for Wikipedia. On September 18, 2018 Wikipedia in Esperanto published its 250 thousandth article. This short article is about Livaie, a community in Northern France.

The Wikipedia version of the Esperanto language was made by the American programmer and esperantist Chuck Smith. With the help of Jerry Muelver and Stefano Kalb. He released the first version on January 2 in 2002, with over 300 pages.
As in all other languages articles are freely editable and recently over 300 users edit Wikipedio in Esperanto every month. Volunteers of Wikipedia continue to add new articles and simultaneously expand and increase existing resources.

The Esperanto Wikipedia holds the 32th position by number of articles. Near the Basque language (45 thousand more), Bulgarian (5 thousand less) and Armenian is approaching quickly. But the amount of articles is not everything. Given the quality of the 1000 most important articles, Esperanto Wikipedia is in a very nice 16th place.

Wikipedia allows access to articles on the most diverse topics used in encyclopedias, from all departments, but for the Esperanto community it has an additional value, such as registering articles on Esperanto activities and initiatives, with photos and illustrations on many facts and people that made up the evolution of our language over more than 130 years.
For many years of its existence, Wikipedia has changed much. Initially, writing was done through a special code. At the moment you can edit and format text as in e-mail. Additionally, advanced technical tools now do monotonous tasks, so you can focus on quality texts. Until now I never wrote an article for wikipedio but use it often when I am looking for special words or topics.
