CIA tool to HACK Linux systems...

in #wikileaks7 years ago (edited)

Weeks ago, we covered Wikileaks leaks in what was called "Treasury 7" or "Vault 7", where the world saw information about dangerous hacking tools used by the CIA never heard of before, most recently for the most targeted Windows system The ELSA tool, which is really a malicious program to infect Windows devices, can help determine the geographical location of the target.

Now, according to a new leak to WikiLeaks, it seems that the agency has not only limited the Windows system but has developed other software for Linux systems, specifically OutlawCountry.

WikiLeaks leaked the tool's manual, showing that the tool has been in use since June 2015 at least and the manual explains how it is used in addition to some information so that the agency can hide all effects of the tool after the end of a targeted attack.

The OutlawCountry tool redirects Internet traffic to other addresses, which allows the agency to track and monitor a particular Linux server, but in this case the agency will need shell access and root privileges.

This means that the agency was hacking Linux servers in other ways before injecting the OutlawCountry tool for monitoring and tracking, which supports the hypothesis of undisclosed gaps in Linux systems that the agency has been able to obtain or detect.

It is worth mentioning that Wikileaks pointed out that the tool works with specific versions of Linux kernel, as it is recommended to make updates constantly and immediately.
