Hello World :)

The question 'Do you use WiFi?', may seem a little ridiculous to most. I mean lets be fair, in this day and age with the Internet-Of-Things, and mobile devices coming out by the dozen, there are probably much fewer people who don't use rather than those who do. Now when I say that this is a somewhat dangerous thing, please don't get me wrong, WiFi really is an amazing creation, and simplifies mine and many other lives daily.

The thing About WiFi is, like all other technological advances, it functions best when it is being used as it is supposed to. There are so very many different protocols and functions even just within the WiFi Standards, which again is excellent, but should any of these functions be misused or misunderstood, then we are left with a problem to deal with.

Now I don't want to get too far into the technicals in this posting as these posts are designed to be easy to read and understand for everyone. But if you are looking to learn more, research 'ARP Tables', 'Man-In-The-Middle-Attacks', and maybe some 'DNS Server Manipulation' just to get started.

Now Id like to give you all some tips about Securing Your WiFi Network.

  1. Users: Knowing who is using your WiFi connection is key to keeping a Secure Network. Much like knowing who is in your home. There are many different ways to check this information, but one of my favorites is an android application called 'Fing' (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.overlook.android.fing&hl=en_CA). (NOTE: Though knowing who is using your internet connection is important, this step can get quite technical, and for this reason is not reccomend for all readers. If IP Addressing is too much for you, I would try to remember the number of connected devices, and ensure that only changes when you add a new device.

  2. Password Security: The second most important thing, is to ensure that you have selected a strong password to defend your network. There are many different methods to choosing good passwords, such as Password Generators/Protectors, though I try to stay away from those, as there are a few downfalls in those regards. Here is a link for those looking to work on their password creation skills. (https://lifehacker.com/four-methods-to-create-a-secure-password-youll-actually-1601854240)
Once you have chosen your new secure password, something I always like to do, is test it against a password strength calculator like (https://www.grc.com/haystack.htm). This is my favorite service, though you can find many other with a simple google search for 'password strength test'.

  3. Default Logins: This may seem like a joke to some, But believe it or not, it is so uncommon for people to leave things as they are from when they bought them, that hackers have started putting together lists(Rainbow Tables) of default Router Names and Passwords, and even more often, the User Credentials to the Router's Firmware. When A hacker tries to hack into a network, Part of the information they need is actually the Name of your Network. (Example: 'Rogers22329')
One thing to remember to do is to personalize that, so that it will not be in any public lists out there. Another thing you should keep in mind is to change the Credentials to your Routers Firmware page(This page can often be reached by visiting 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 in your browser).

One last thing I'd like to share with you on the topic of securing your password, When an Attacker is attempting to break into your network, part of the process involves kicking you off of it. Now this is simply for them to watch how you reconnect to the network, but it can definitely be used as a warning sign, if you are consistently being booted from your network, you may consider changing the password.

I was going to go into the threats of what having an attacker inside your Wireless Network could be, only I am noticing that this post has gotten a tad long, and I think I will save all of that for my next posting. Please feel free to comment, as I would love to know what you thought of the content, and maybe even things you'd like me to go over in one of my future posts.
