White Rabbit: A Blockchain’s Crack on Film and Series Piracy

in #whiterabbit6 years ago (edited)

Back in the time of DVD sales, filmmakers and the film industry at large used to profit greatly from digital distribution. Today, in the age of streaming services, the income has gone far from that for a score of reasons. White Rabbit aims to eliminate these reasons with blockchain.

According to White Rabbit, filmmakers face three main challenges earning with streaming services:

- lack of transparency provided by streaming services;
- continuously reducing choice of content offered by streaming services;
- because of the small selection of films and series some users reach out to pirate resources which gives them a further boost.

Key Features

White Rabbit Ecosystem

White Rabbit ecosystem includes and is built for:

- users;
- content rights holders;
- content creators;
- partner streaming sites;
- third-party developers;
- White Rabbit itself.

White Rabbit Plugin

The White Rabbit browser plugin recognizes the content as it’s being streamed and allows users to offer White Rabbit Tokens (WRT) to content right holders as a payment guarantee.

Smart Contracts

Once the plugin has captured the content at streaming, a smart contract deducts the tokens from the user’s account and transfers it to the rights holders. In case there has been no smart contract created between the user and the right holder, the latter may enter into one and accept tokens or reject. Should the tokens be rejected, they are returned to the user. Tokens are kept in an encrypted distribution pool which allows for user anonymity.

The Rabbit Hole

User personal content library, storing access to all the content that a user have paid for and to exclusive materials, extras, director’s cuts, merchandise and interviews, is called Rabbit Hole. It also enables interactions between users and content creators, watching film screenings in VR together, and using other available third-party applications.

Roadmap

The work on the White Rabbit project began late last year. They recently opened the whitelist in anticipation of the presale starting on May 7th. The MVP of White Rabbit is scheduled to be available within the second quarter of the year, followed by the announcement of the first partner streaming sites. Alpha and Beta versions are expected to be launched in the third and fourth quarters of the year respectively. The fourth quarter is also scheduled to see the final product launch.

Next year, the White Rabbit team plans to release Rabbit Hole and a new content recognition technology.

Competition

Neither the White Rabbit Whitepaper, nor their website mention competitors. However, if you Google for “Film Piracy Blockchain” you will come across a bunch of startups which are close to White Rabbit in regard to the goals they aim to achieve: Custos, DECENT, and Veredictum. Even though they are not exactly the same thing, we would love White Rabbit to outline how they are different.

Whitepaper

The Whitepaper has 34 pages, which presents a detailed vision of the business with White Rabbit, development scenarios, roadmap, information about the team and the token. There is also a meticulous analysis of the streaming industry provided. Typically, blockchain startups devote more attention to technology.
