[Whisky Guide For Novices] - What is Whisky? A little introduction

Whisky is a beverage out of fermented grain mash. It needs to mature at least three years in wooden casks to be called whisky.

The name "whisky" comes from the Gaelic word "uisce" (or "uisge") and means "water". [1] In Ireland and in the United States of America you also might see the word Whiskey written with an "e".

History

So far it is not clear whether Scotland or Ireland is the country of origin of the whisky but according to a legend the Celts were the first to destill a water clear liquid - aqua vitae.

This aquavite was first mentioned in 1494 in scottish tax documents. With the years every scotthish clan produced its own whisky for their own use. [2] With the growing number of monasteries in different countries the knowledge was passed on and more and more producers appeared all over the world.

Different Types

First there is a difference regarding the feedstock. There are Malt Whiskies and Grain Whiskies. Malt whisky consists mainly of malted barley. Grain Whisky is made out of any type of grains. 

The most famous whisky is the Single Malt Whisky which is made only from one kind of grain from one producer. On the other side Blended Whiskies are made from different types of whisky so lovers might say it is not a real whisky. 

In this post I want to focus more on the scottish and irish whiskies so I won't explain what types you might find in America. If you are interested just have a look at this list. [3]
