视其善者，取以为师；视其恶者，用以为戒
以史为镜，学皇帝所学
大禹此时已经当上帝王，一日，他到各地去巡行视察，路上看到一名罪犯正在押解途中，心中很是难受，于是下车询问罪人犯了什么罪？为什么犯罪？问完之后，大禹非常伤心，甚至痛苦流涕。
大禹身边的随从看到后问：“此人罪有应得，按规定就应该处于刑罚，君主为何为他而痛惜呢？”大禹回答：“我不是为他痛惜，是为我自己伤心啊，尧舜帝在时，国泰民安，风调雨顺，人人都能遵守法律，安居乐业。而如今我当了帝王，却发生了这种事情，虽然犯罪之人是普通百姓，其实是因为我的不作为和德行不够导致的。”
大禹不会指责唾弃罪犯，却自责自己的德行不够。所以，大禹才会一直努力提升自己的道德品行。
