What Words Can Do
Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. (Eph.5:4)
The language we use reflects the quality of our spirit and is the measure according to which others evaluate us. If our words fortify and inspire others, we will always have friends. People will enjoy our company because of the blessing that they receive from our words.
Never underestimate the power of the spoken word. Not only does it manifest who we really are, but it also has an immense influence on others. If bitterness and hate dominate our words, or if we are driven by a compelling need to hurt and humiliate others, words become instruments that can inflict irreparable damage.
There are people who cannot speak their thoughts except in vulgar or blasphemous terms. God's name is taken in vain. Such utterances not only indicate an impoverished mind, but also an immature spirit.
By using words in the right way we can help to heal injured hearts that have been battered by inconsiderate people. When communicating with others we should always choose our words carefully. Using the following miracle-working words every day can make a world of difference: "I love you and I appreciate you."
Set a guard over my mouth, O Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips (Ps.141:3).
Our words are a reliable indication of the state of our souls. -Francis de Sales
