75 Billion Messages Were Sent On WhatsApp On New Year’s Eve
WhatsApp says on New Year’s Eve, numerous users complained that WhatsApp was down on December 31 as they ushered in 2018 with wishes to family and friends. That’s perhaps because 75 billion messages were exchanged on the platform that night.
New Year’s eve didn’t only break Facebook Live’s record of the most live broadcasts on one day, with 10 million during the night. It also broke WhatsApp‘s record of the most messages sent in one day. The messaging platform saw 75 billion messages exchanged by users on December 31 night. It is notable that WhatsApp suffered an outage lasting more than an hour late on December 31, 2017, and in the early hours from January 1, 2018.
As with Facebook Live, WhatsApp broke the record it set during its 2016 New Year’s Eve 63 billion messages sent. The 75 billion messages 20 billion were just from India which has over 1 billion users worldwide and counts India as its biggest market with *200 million users of WhatsApp.
In a statement, WhatsApp said the 75 billion messages sent worldwide included more than 13 billion images and 5 billion videos. The company says it recorded this data is only for 12 am to 11:59 pm PST on December 31.

WhatsApp announced that 55 billion messages 4.5 billion photos and 1 billion videos are sent every day on average, so the numbers aren’t particularly surprising.
