Whales, Dolphins, Minnows... Sharks?

i have only joined the steemit community today and have been reading up on it

the concept is amazing but at first I was a bit flabbergasted by the constant references to fish and sea mamals

but basically there are those that came in early, gathered a following and now reap the benefits of being there first or providing good content and thus becoming a whale

but is it not the case that as in the ocean there is only so much room in the ecology to be the top dog (to stick to animal references)

the next step for them would be... use great influence with great responsability...

The only thing here is that there should be a balancing system but that does not seem to be there (unless i am missing something)

Is just resteeming articles worth being paid a lot of money? Should there not be any sharks in the water that take a bit out of the whales once in a while?

Steemit is an amazing setup that will let people write about their favourite topic and get paid/recognised for it but as far as I can tell from my beginner/minnow point of view the system seems a bit out of whack

please correct me if this is not the case because I am really curious to know
