Maslow Hierarchy of Needs

There are hierarchies of needs of man, according to Abraham Maslow. This concept falls within the purview of simple psychology. Maslow believed that man is motivated by a set of needs at a particular time, and when these needs are achieved, another set of needs will manifest.

This is a simple chart of Maslow Hierarchy of needs depicting the various stages of needs. At the base is the basic need divided into two stages, the basics of the basic. This includes food, water, shelter etc. They are the starting piont of every man's cravings.
When these are met, the desire for security and safety will come in. No man thinks about safety when he is hungry, or when he has no shelter. It takes all these for one to think of protection of life and property.

After the above is met, the desire to love and be loved, and sense of belonging creep in. We want to identify and be part of our community, belong to a family. Achievement of this will result to esteem need.

Under the esteem need, man wants to be recognised and respected for his achievement. People work harder to be outstanding, to show their relevance and the stuff they are made of.

A simple Maslow Hierarchy depicts self-actualization as the end of need. Here, man reaches his full potential, achieving self-fulfilment in life.

However, in an expanded Maslow Hierarchy of need, the final need is transcendence.

Transcendence suggests the need to help others grow. At a given stage in life, one has no need to acquire more. It is a time of stock taking in life, when one looks back and wants to make amendments. When one looks at others and desire to assist them grow.

Limitations Maslow's Theory

In my life experiences, I have not seen a fulfilled person. One who has reached his full potential, has achieved enough, and ready to assist others to grow. However, I have seen politicians who have acquired more than the state but still want some more.

Man by nature, they say, is selfish. Nobody gets enough. People bend in acquiring and acquiring even that which they do not need. In my personal opinion, the transcendence stage is unattainable, especially in my country. People have many reasons why they will not assist their relative let alone a distant person.
