If ever there was a chilling reality that brilliantly depicted what was progressive in its politics, it is West Bengal. Today, it stands cornered, not by external forces, but by its own women—the fear that has gripped its women. The increasing number of rape cases in West Bengal has exposed the failure of the state machinery to protect its female citizens. The insecurities grow, and so does the once-proud state's name.

A Government in Denial

These horrendous incidents have been occurring far too often. And yet, the government finds itself in a bind, helpless to stall the tide of violence. The state's response to these atrocities has only intensified criticism. Protests have been erupting across the state of late and, if anything, only tend to further inflame discontent and exasperation.

These riots have exemplified how deep public sentiment has been shaken at recent times. Understandable, but violence has never been the solution. It is time the government woke up and took action to avert this. It is not simply about law and order; it is about the fundamental right of women.

The citizens of West Bengal are crying for justice. For safety. They want a government that values the lives of its women. This is an issue where a crisis needs a well-rounded approach: a tough hand for the criminals, better law and order, and most importantly, preventive work right at the root.

The state can't afford to dilly-dally this time; if it loses the trust of the people now, it can perhaps never win it back again.
