Types of Welding Applications for Electrodes

Welding is a simple process of joining more than one material by applying different types of friction and external heat. It is most commonly used in manufacturing, automobile and construction sectors. Most people tend to think that welding electrodes are used only for dealing with metals. This is not right. Welding can also be done for plastic materials.
Let us take a closer look at the different types of welding techniques usually applied in various fields.

Arc Welding
In this type of welding technique, materials are melted completely before joining them. An electric welding arc is used. The electric arc between the subjected materials is created using non-consuming welding electrodes. It is one of the most effective techniques and is suitable for even the highest strength metals like carbon steel. In arc welding, the temperature for the electric arc can go up to as high as 3500°C.This type of welding is mostly used in the manufacturing sector and the automobile sector.Depending on the type of job being done, arc welding can be further categorized as Submerged Arc Welding (SAW), Plasma Arc Welding (PAW), Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), and more.

Oxyacetylene Welding
This technique is commonly known as Gas welding. The concerned materials are melted using heat from a concentrated flame. The metals are joined after getting melted first.The entire process of oxyacetylene welding is focussed on the concentrated flame, which is controlled by using a welding torch.The combination of oxygen and acetylene is capable of producing heat around 3200°C and is suitable working on strong metals. The welding torch helps keep the flow of the concentrated flame in check while melting the metals.Hydrogen, propane and other fuel gases are also used in this welding process. Oxyacetylene welding, or gas welding, is very popular as it has numerous advantages. It is low cost and maintenance can be easily transported, and easy to handle. It is mainly used for fabrication of sheet metal and joining thin metals. All these make it incredibly handy in aircraft and shipbuilding industries which involve working with heavy and strong metals.

Tungsten Inert Gas Welding
Welding electrodes made of tungsten are used in this welding process to create an arc between the materials. Tungsten electrode is non-consumable and so it is not consumed in the welding process. The main advantage of this welding technique is that it works best for welding non-ferrous metals such as copper, aluminium, magnesium, nickel, and more. This type of welding is widely applicable in the automobile industry.

Flux Cored Arc Welding
Flux cored welding process can be done in two forms – self-shielded flux core welding and gas shielded flux core welding.In the former technique, the flux inside the electrode produces slag and gas when heated. No external agent is required for the heating process. In the latter, an external gas is used to produce the slag. The shielding gas can be controlled, which is why it is so popular among welders.

In conclusion, the welding process can vary from industry to industry. But whatever be the job, welding electrodes are a needed to produce a long-lasting arc that can bond metals strongly.
