WednesdayWalk/Austria
Hello wednesdaywalk friends!
Yesterday was a beautiful, warm and sunny autumn day, so my husband and I took advantage of this wonderful day and made a trip to the nearby wine region eisenberg (austria, burgenland). The winemakers have already finished the harvest.
In the south of Burgenland lies an area whose undulating hills and steep slopes are planted with vines, while the crests often crown deciduous and fir forests. This is where the continental and Mediterranean climates meet, the east merges with the south, landscapes, climatic zones and cultures mix together to form a unique, quiet and often closed-off place. The area is characterized by countless green shades, varied terrain waves, quiet places and strong-minded people. Of the 515 hectares of vineyards in the area, about 180 hectares fall on the Blaufränkisch. Starting from the region's most distinctive elevation, the red wines of Southern Burgenland have always been referred to as "Eisenberger" and mineral-rich Blaufränkisch with their own piquancy, which does not appear anywhere else in this species.
On the steep slopes you will find primarily slate soils that produce very clear-fruity, mineral-influenced wines. At the foot of the elevations, the soils are more profound, with strongly ferrous clay, which provides earthy wines with a fascinating tannin structure. Both types of soil are unique in Austria and therefore guarantee a distinctive wine type.
Many centuries before the Romans brought the wine culture to Pannonia, the Celts on Eisenberg already pressed the grapes for their fermented grape juice. The extremely mineral-rich soil still produces rich and intense red wines, a sparkling Welschriesling or fabulous Uhudler that can compete with the world's best wine.
This year's grape harvest started two to three weeks earlier than usual this year. The reason for this was the weather conditions since the spring - because of the normally cold winter the vines started to bloom earlier and the very warm weather in May favored the growth.
Burgenland is one of the federal states with the most hours of sunshine a year. Especially the southern Burgenland is already under great influence of the Mediterranean climate. Warm and dry, it presents itself. One of the reasons why viticulture in Burgenland enjoys a centuries-old tradition, especially around the Eisenberg.
