Vietnam War Memorial at Bald Hill
The 321 foot memorial sits atop a 330 foot hill at Farmingville, Long Island, NY. It was dedicated to those who died, were wounded and served in the war.
The hill is part of a series of hills running down the spine of Long Island. The long running ridge is the moraine or debris left where the last ice-age glacier stopped and then retreated north by melting.
The area was originally called "Bald Hills" before Farmingville. The early settlers gave the hills names, such as Danger and Breakneck. I believe the war memorial is on Breakneck but most everybody calls it Bald Hill.
I had some business at my local Townhall which sits atop a nearby hill, so checking out the memorial was convenient.
It is very impressive in person with its sharp angles and flag draped pointed top.
The park is between County road 83 where the road was split to accommodate an overlook park atop the hill in 1971. It was decided to build the memorial after people felt the veterans of the war had been wrongly maligned from anti-war sentiment and needed a memorial to help heal their sacrifices. It was dedicated in 1991.
Shooting into the sun the memorial acts as a foil.
View looking south from the base of the memorial. Atlantic ocean on the horizon.
sources .... I found very little information on the statistics of the memorial.
