Wednesday Walk to Nelson’s Monument and the 3 Ships

in #wednesdaywalk5 years ago

Of course, there's a Nelson's column in Trafalgar Square in London, but I didn't realise that we have our own monument in Birchen Edge in Derbyshire, UK, so we decided to go and check it out!

It was a hot day as we made our way along the footpath. It was a steady incline but got more steeper up to the monument.

The monument was erected by local business man, John Brightman in 1810 in honour of Admiral Lord Nelson after the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Further down the path we found three ‘ships’ which are actually large gritstone boulders.

They have their names carved into the rock, Victory, Defiance and Royal Soverin, the same names as Nelson's ships.

A lovely walk but getting down the steep footpath was even worse than getting up, but it was definitely worth it.

Thank you very much! I've lived here all my life and only just found this monument.

What a cool walk, the column itself is interesting but those rocks are so cool

Thanks for joining @wednesday Walk :)
