November, no, ... already December! The weather is moving so fast, winter has come but no snow yet. From time to time the sun and the blue sky remind me of the mild autumn that has just died.
On this beautiful Wednesday day I thought I'd take a walk through the city center. As a reminder, I was out of town for a year. Now it's over, I'm back home and I want to see if anything has changed during the time I was gone. It's Wednesday and it fits perfectly into #wednesdaywalk, this wonderful initiative of @tattoodjay that proposes us to take small walks and tell what we see around.
The city is Bucharest and is the capital of Romania. There are almost two million inhabitants and over one million four hundred thousand cars (without counting those that daily transit the city).
My point of interest is what is called "University", the best known point in the city, also called kilometer zero! Because from this place the distances to the other cities of the country are measured. It is the meeting place of many inhabitants and tourists, from here you can get to the most interesting objectives of the city very quickly.
It is the place where the Revolution started in 1989 and led to the fall of communism in Romania. It is a very important place for us, those from Bucharest.
Surprise! It was a big surprise that a new monument appeared here. A monument placed in the middle of the intersection where last year there was only a circle with grass and flowers. A statuary group dedicated to the War of Independence in 1877. Then Romania defeated the army of the Ottoman Empire and became independent. A very important moment for our country.
I am not very happy with the fact that this monument was located there. I don't know the reasons but I think it was a mistake. In the university square many people died at the 1989 revolution. I think it should have been a monument to remember their sacrifice. Well, that's my opinion. I didn't notice that others were dissatisfied with this.
Fortunately, very close are some places of great artistic and visual value. The pleasure of seeing them again made me forget my dissatisfaction.
It is about the building of the National Theater, a building with a special architecture, built during the communist period but recently renovated. It is a place where I spent many pleasant moments in youth and where I saw many memorable shows.
The statue in front of the theater is Ioan Luca Caragiale, the most famous Romanian playwright. His plays, a satire on the morals of the Romanian society since the end of the nineteenth century are very similar to what is happening in the country now. These plays are permanently played in this theater.
Near the theater is the Intercontinental Hotel, which was the tallest building in Bucharest (approximately twenty floors). Bucharest is in a very seismic zone and because of this, very high buildings are not built. In the last years, due to the new technologies, it was possible to build buildings of almost forty floors.
This is a part of the university square. I was glad that I could see it again after almost a year. It's a beautiful place that has awakened many memories.
