My Brother's Wedding
A wedding is a ceremony where a couple is united through marriage. It varies with culture, tradition, religion etc.
Our wedding ceremony is referred as 'Biya' in Assamese language of the state of Assam,India. The whole affair takes about two to three days. The pre-wedding ritual is called 'Juroon' where the family of the groom comes to the bride's house to give the 'Juroon'( gifts of clothes and jewelleries). The bride wears traditional Assamese attire called (Mekhela Chaddar).
The next day, the groom gets ready to go to the bride's house for the marriage. The groom wears the traditional dress of dhoti,kurta,cheleng chaddar and puts basil leaves garland on his forehead.
The couple exchange garlands and performs various rituals during the wedding.
After the wedding, the bride is brought to the groom's house with the bride's face covered.
The next day, a reception is given to the close friends,relatives,neighbours was organised to celebrate and shower blessings to the newly wedded couple.

I am a sucker for weddings. I have never been lucky enough to go to a wedding as colorful as this one. I'm not sure if there are bridesmaids and groomsmen, like a traditional US wedding, but at least they don't have to wear those horrid matching dresses like in our culture. Do you know about them? Check them out, it will make you giggle!
I also noticed the henna on the hand of the bride with her covered face. Please forgive me if I am not calling it the right name. Is this also traditionally for weddings? Sometimes at farmer's markets you will see someone doing these here in the US. I was always worried to get one as I did not want to appropriate your culture. or seem disrespectful. I am intrigued!
