I think in a similar way to you, Japan have the precedent of the light novels but when the industry turned into a more for profit bussines the amateur writers went to the internet for the freedom of self publishing. I'm an regular reader of the fan translate who people like the bakatsuki staff and others do, usually just because they want to share something they find worth of reading.
