Record low sea ice in the Arctic (again)

in #weather6 years ago

Now a lot of you may be familiar with Climate Change, whatever your opinions on it may be the reality of human induced climate change is becoming ever more apparent with impacts all around the world. The signs cannot be ignored and the science is compelling, unless greenhouse gas emissions are curbed we will be in for a very challenging future.

The last three years in a row saw record low maximum extent and record low minimum extent, it is very worrying and scientists suspect that the severe cold snaps recently in Europe and the North America are directly related to the low ice extent in the arctic because with an warmer north pole the temperature difference between the mid latitudes and the pole are reduced creating a weak polar vortex ( a westerly flow that pushes warm air north or cold air south), thus creating extreme flows that push arctic air far south and warm air into the arctic only increasing ice melt.

The north pole were warmer than parts of the UK on 24 February 2018, that is worrying and extreme. This winter were an exceptional warm one for the north pole, some days saw temperatures of 30 degrees Celsius above average for this time of year. This may create an additional problem due to thawing permafrost it is believed that massive amounts of methane greenhouse gas is released only increasing the amount of greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere with this process known as a positive feedback loop which can cause runaway Global warming.

The planet is trying to warn us that something is wrong, governments around the world need to take action now and swiftly.
