Southeast Georgia and Northern Florida smashed by an ice storm

Global warming? President Trump was right when he said we could use a little bit of that global warming right now. This is the biggest winter weather event that has happened in the South since 1989. I thought these atorms would be a thing of the past? Anyway, lets take a look at the numbers.

Savannah, Georgia and Charleston, South Carolina had their biggest snowfalls since Dec. 23, 1989. I actually remember that storm rather vividly I was 5 years old. My family had just left Pennsylvania to go to Georgia to visit my aunt and spend Christmas with her. We went to Ft. Stewart, Georgia as my uncle was in the military and stationed there. The joke amongst my family is that we brought the cold from Pennsylvania. It snowed 4 inches and people couldn't drive anywhere because they didn't know how. I picturing this same scene unfolding with cars crashed in drainage ditches because people don't have winter driving skills.

This is also the first measurable snowfall for Tallahassee, Florida since Dec.23 1989. Yes, Tallahassee did recieve some snow. The snow made it's way east to Duval County which is Jacksonville, Florida. The national weather service there measured trace amounts.

Of bigger concern for the Jacksonville metro area which includes Brunswick, Georgia is the ice accumulations. There are reports of scattered downed trees and power outages from 0.5 inches of ice accumulations. Having lived in Brunswick I know firsthand these people have zero winter driving skills. Naturally there has been reports by storm chasers of numerous accidents. Some video is up on YouTube from storm chasers.
