How Deep is Your Flood?

It sounds like a song, but once you are in the flooded situation, I don't think you can still sing about it.

Our city is not only known for its shopping malls and local fish called Bangus. It is also known for its flood. Being close to the river and sea, our city is located in a lower plain. It is no surprise that every rainy season, this place gets flooded. To give you an idea on the level of the water, here is a photo of a popular means of transportation called a tricycle. Look at the level of the water.

No, you're not looking at the motorcycle trying to cross a river. It's a normal water level in this city. If you notice in this photo, the water level has reached passed the pipe of the motorcycle. It was amazing how it could sustain moving at this water level.

The local government tried different ways to solve the flood. They tried adding another layer of concrete to the road to make it higher. They tried dredging the rivers to lower the water level, and they tried strengthening the riverbanks to reduce overflowing. So far, none of them provided lasting solution to this problem.

This problem has proven how resilient Filipinos are. Filipinos learned to adapt to this situation. Seldom will you see any pouting faces or any annoyed look on their face as they wait for the water to subside. On the other hand, some of these people came to accept their fate and no longer have any desire to improve their situation. The question these people asked is not "Is it flooded in your place?", but "how deep is your flood?"
