CAN ANYONE LIVING IN THE NORTHERN STATES POST PICTURES OF THEIR SNOWCOVER? Or other examples of how super cold it is!

in #weather7 years ago

With how incredibly frigid it has been the past few weeks for the northeast where I live, I can only imagine and wonder what it must be like to be in the northern states with the temperatures so cold. And the constant snow storms/ dustings.. the albedo that is increased deflects more solar radiation.. I just checked coolwx.com and nullschool.net..

It appears that there is a perturbation at the 10 hPa altitude level above Washington State and the northwest Pacific states, a clockwise rotating cell, aligned adjacent to the very large Polar Vortex that circulates clockwise around the arctic.. And that looks to be pushing the extreme cold polar vortex air mass down into the middle of the continent.

The temperatures in Montana and the Dakotas rival that of central and northern Siberia at this very moment. Insanity.

Its also really interesting to see how powerful the residual heat, contained in the massive lakes of the Great Lakes, can be in keeping Michigan semi-warmer than its surroundings.. as that is the general direction of the flow of air. But that is the exact reason they get insane amounts of lake effect snow. For those who do not know how lake effect snow is formed: colder air moves over water still warm from the summer, picks up its moisture as the surface of the lake evaporates into the extreme dry/cold airmass and is subsequently deposited once the airmass has moved onto land, where it is much colder than the waer, and thus the moisture cannot be retained in the suddenly much thinner air and falls as snow!
