I Learned Something from 3 Garbagemen—and you can too

Earlier this year I took a trip over to Malta.

The biggest lesson I learned on this recent trip came from 3 garbagemen.

I was hanging out in a country club with some of the wealthiest individuals in the world, who seemed bored, unsatisfied, and comfortable.

I walked outside of the country club and saw three garbage men picking up trash, laughing, making jokes, and having the time of their lives.

It made me realize, no matter what levels of success you've had, if you don't have a task at hand, you will not be happy.

Work can make you happy.

Knowing that you are serving a purpose and a part of a much bigger picture makes you happy.

But make no mistake about it—I'm not saying being poor will make you happy.
At the age of 25 I was poor and it sucked. I used to live on the left side of this little brick duplex:

It wasn't just the surroundings that made me miserable though, it was the fact that I had no clearly defined purpose in life.

But if you're going to be unhappy, have some money to go along with it!

The honest truth is money solves problems, and as long as you have PURPOSE, money can help make you happier.

When I got tired of having no purpose—and sick and tired of being broke, I began to study wealthy people.

I wanted to discover their secrets.

How did they get so rich?
What did they do?

I'm talking about guys like Andrew Carnegie, J.P. Morgan, John D. Rockefeller , and Warren Buffett.

I didn’t study what the wealthy were saying, I studied what they did to create their wealth and keep it.

I went from being in that little brick duplex to this:

I live on the 33rd floor, but each floor in the building has got a wrap-around balcony that has a much better view than my old brick duplex had:

Not bad for a kid that was broke, a "C" average student, and the black sheep of his family, right?

When I started studying the wealthy, I was able to discover and implement the secrets that made and kept them wealthy.

It wasn’t just hard work and education—it was more than that.

I noticed that the wealthy weren’t saving money, they used it.

—They invested in assets, not liabilities.
