Ponca Wilderness Area
Buffalo National River
Arkansas
My brother Michael and I hiked here from the Compton Trailhead to this 209 foot high waterfall. The falls flows into a creek that empties into the Buffalo River, contained by 200 foot bluffs on three sides. It's a difficult 2.5 mile hike that is almost straight down with very few switchbacks. It is the highest falls between the Rocky Mountains and the Appalacians.
Another smaller falls downstream
We accessed this place the year before from the Buffalo River when we canoed from Steelhead Campground to Kyle's Landing. This half mile hike is a much easier route to access the falls. The spring rains fill up the rivers, creeks and springs, so this is one of the best times to visit.
