Opening unhealed wounds to do justice?

The Supreme Court decided last Wednesday to struck down civil war Amnesty Law approved in 1993 with the intention to close a painful chapter for all Salvadoreans without looking back.  El Salvador's Civil War was a conflict that lasted from 1980 until 1992. A war between a coalition or "umbrella organization" of five left-wing guerrilla group and the military-led government of El Salvador.

As a defender of human rights I have a hunger of justice and as a Salvadorean I crave peace among my people. So when i heard that the Supreme Court declared the law unconstitutional, which means human rights violations by the rebels and military during the civil war could now be prosecuted, i found myself in a dilemma.

Do I want justice? Of course I do. But, at what cost? My country has struggled for decades with division, in fact, division was one of the powder kegs of the civil war. And after the war, what was left was death, pain, hunger, destruction,  sorrow and, again, DIVISION.

I can understand why the controversial Amnesty Law doesn't seem right: it closes the door to prosecute the perpetrators and masterminds of crimes. But i can also understand why this Law is a necessary evil.

To be continued..

Sort:

Doing away with the Amnesty Law WILL result in more division.

Have you heard the term "Divide and Conquer"???

It is time for Salvadorians to WAKE UP and realize this is just more of the same.

We are all Salvadorians. It is time for us to move forward and bury the past before it consumes our future.
