Reality punches hard

in #war5 years ago

I happen to run across a thread on Twitter that blew my mind a little bit. As it so happens the US Army for Memorial day asked people to share their stories, to share how serving had impacted their lives. I don't really know what they thought would be the outcome, but boy some of the comments broke my heart.

I want to be clear about this, I have nothing but respect and admiration for those who serve. Yes, I may not agree with any of the wars, but that's because I know they are almost always political shenanigans and people of power securing resources for themselves, while sending others to die.

I'm not against honoring our military either, I think they deserve it. But, It angers me that they get forsaken when they come back, it boils my blood that we have so many homeless people who served and our government who claims to love them, conveniently forgot.

If you are up to it, go read the tweets... but be ready to be emotional.

As yourself, I have nothing but admiration and respect towards all of those who have served in the armed forces and who are serving now.
My father served during WW ll, and is a member of The Greatest Generation, as referred to and written about in Tom Brokow's Best Seller.
Upon his return home from war, he was supported, work was available, and people were appreciative of his efforts.

War sucks, and politicians need to remember what is at stake, blood.
Just possible, if it were to be spilled by their kin, they would think twice before giving their stamp of approval to going to war.

Lots of people making mega bucks, that in itself is an uphill battle.
Lets have some of profiteers expose their kids and grand-kids to the horrors of war.

I am not naive to think that blood shed is always unavoidable, and that a strong military isn't a deterrent, but there has to be a better way.

If war is unavoidable, which at times it is, then its a good thing we are prepared.

Reading the tweets, we all need to step to the plate and support our veterans and those presently serving.

There are so many ways to support those who have served. A few things people could get involved with would be the Wounded Warrior Project, and Homes for Our Troops. There are countless others.

He was spot on with his thoughts concerning the age at which citizens should be allowed to enlist.

Yeah I'm some how always happy to leave in a country without Army.

What bothers me the most is how everyone spins it. I heard the term ultimate sacrifice like ten times yesterday. At work, on the radio, on the TV, on the internet...

The picture painted is always one that glorifies the soldier and the individual, but the real goal is to brainwash the population into thinking we are the good guys and the military industrial complex is making the world a better place.

Propaganda really knows how to capitalize on the emotions of people who don't know better (which is most people). "Support our troops" is code for "support endless war for profit".

all allegedly sanctioned by God.

So unlike them to leave it open to this... Somebody will not have a job soon!
