Giant Silk Moth

in #walkwithme8 years ago (edited)

While doing some gardening early on a very dreary and drizzly Mother's Day afternoon, I unknowingly flushed out this beautiful silk moth.

When I stopped for a moment, there it was perched on the sidewalk.

It was in no hurry to fly off and was kind enough to sit through a short photo session.

Excerpt from Wikipedia: Antheraea polyphemus
Antheraea polyphemus (polyphemus moth) is a North American member of the family Saturniidae, the giant silk moths. It is a tan-colored moth, with an average wingspan of 15 cm (6 in). The most notable feature of the moth is its large, purplish eyespots on its two hind wings. The eye spots give it its name – from the Greek myth of the Cyclops Polyphemus. The species is widespread in continental North America, with local populations found throughout subarctic Canada and the United States. The caterpillar can eat 86,000 times its weight at emergence in a little less than two months.

Awesome photography dear friend , how you take pics of butterfly .

Beautiful butterfly . Just love for it 😘

Oh my. It's huge @cognoscere. I'm not normally a big fan of moths but that one is very beautiful. 😊

Beautiful!

Thanks, it is a very cool looking moth I must say!

Gorgeous moth, and the photos are really well done. Beautiful captures of the antennae and spots and all. I can see why a bird might forgo this one with the eyespots. Amazing how that works. Though I've sworn when you point a big camera lens at some critters, they seem to freak out a bit. Probably same notion. Only a cyclops. Even scarier...

It was a little challenging to capture these photos because I had just finishing a bunch of weeding and my hands were a little too shaky to hold the camera in one hand and model the moth in the other ;-)

Beautiful. Although I would have screamed, why? I don't know. Moths creep me out. But this one is very beautifully decorated. And huge.....glad you put it in your hand to show it's size.

The one close up with the antennae is amazing. Nice job!

Itu rarely found recently, look wonderful I like it best. Perfect metamorfosis it seem the duplication of kite artistic.

Hope you enjoy your Monday @cognoscere, warm greeting from Indonesia.
