Lets Walk round the old Captial Teguise
Lets take a look at the Village from a vantage point High above, at the Castillo Santa Barbara. Which now houses the Museum of the Canarian Emigrant. It relates the sad history of mass emigration to South America. Forced either by Royal decree or complete poverty. It is sited on the rim of a volcanic creater. It was built in the 16th Century as a lookout and protection for the villagers, from Pirates arriving from the sea.
Castillo Santa Barbara
Lets start our walk in the now empty Market square looking towards the Church. This Square is the site of the largest Sunday tourist market on the Island.
Down an alleyway towards the main church square. The Village of Teguise has the feel of a colonial capital filled with fine historic buildings.
Entering the Plazza, with its central fountain.
Protected by two Iron Lion statues.
The Stone paved streets of the islands oldest town are a pleasure to walk.
Lets take a peek inside the church before we explore further.
One of the many Statues that surround the walls.
On our way from the church we pass a shop that sells Donkeys and Legs.....
The narrow streets are lined with carved wooden balconies and doorways.
Down one side road we find the Old Cinema Now used as an Emporium of old chinese art and Objets d'art.
The old Arclight projector.
So that concludes our little Stroll for today.
Before we leave lets look back at the castle where we began.
We hope you enjoyed the day out in Teguise. (remember to pronounce the E on the end)
Join us again soon. On our walks aroud the Beautiful island of Lanzarote.
I love how in so many of your photos it looks like you are the only person there amongst all of those white buildings...
