Africa #18: Swimming in the world’s most thrilling infinity pool: The Devil’s Pool

We took a plane from Cape Town to Livingstone and landed there around 2pm. We booked the Devil’s Pool Tour in advance for the next day, so we had some time to check out the city.

The tour to the Devil’s Pool is only doable in the dry season, when the Zambezi River is carrying less water, so you won’t get flushed down the falls. You can book this tour for example on www.shearwatervictoriafalls.com.
You can choose between the morning, the afternoon or the evening tour. The morning tour is the cheapest and at this time of the day you can see a rainbow in the waterfall, so our choice was clear.

The next morning we took a taxi to the Royal Livingstone Hotel, because every Devil’s Pool tour starts here. In our group were 6 other people. After a short ride with a boat we arrived at the Livingstone Island, a small island in the Zambezi River.

From there you have to swim about 100m to the Devil’s Pool. As soon as you arrive at the pool, one by one (or the people who belong together) can go inside. The feeling when you are close to the edge of the Victoria Falls and the water of the Zambezi is rushing past you is beyond words. We couldn’t compare it with anything else we have ever experienced.

After everyone is finished you get a small, but very tasty breakfast on Livingstone Island and after that they will drive you back to the Royal Livingstone.

Are there any negative aspects?
Of course there are. First of all the price, for the morning tour (the cheapest one) you have to pay 100$. The tour itself lasts for about 2h, with 5-10min only in the Devil’s Pool. You have to book it via the Royal Livingstone, because other local tour operators aren’t allowed to do the tour, that’s why it is so expensive. And there were quite a few other people, because there are other boats going to the pool as well. The place has become quite popular in the last years.
But in our opinion it is worth the downsides for sure. As far as we know there isn’t any other place on earth, were you can experience such an amazing infinity pool. If you know another, please write it in the comments ;)
